Leather

First selection John Whites and Sedgewicks bridle butt are used for all products (unless otherwise stated). It is available in the following colours: Australian nut, Conker, Black and Dark Havana. Please note that colours may appear different in the picture than in the actual products. Other colours may be available on request.

A strip of leather is cut from the hide for the purpose of the item being made, e.g. reins form the strongest part of the hide. The edges are then trimmed off for the comfort of the user. The edges are then stained with the appropriate colour and polished to seal the edges. A crease mark (a line close to the edge of the leather) is applied to improve the appearance of the strap work. Where there is to be stitching on the leather pricking irons are used to mark where the stitches will be sewn. The item is then ready to stitch. Stitching is done using saddlers stitch; this involves two needles and an awl (a tool to pierce the leather). Two needles are used for added strength. This however means that there are three motions to every stitch with ten stitches to the inch hand stitching is not the quickest thing to do.
Lining Leather
When lining or padding is required on an item Pittards panel hide is used. This is high quality soft leather, available in dark brown or black.
Thread

Tiger thread is used for hand stitching. This is a braided polyester thread that is used for long life. Tiger thread is held in stock in black, dark brown, red and white. Other colours may be available on request, just email to enquire. Linen thread is used when a more tradition yellow thread is required. This is hand coated with beeswax to prolong its lifespan.
Buckles and Fittings

A choice of solid brass (gold coloured) or stainless steel (silver coloured) buckles are used. Both these are used for long life.
